Chilonzor metro station

History and architecture

Opened in 1977, the station takes its name from one of Tashkent's largest housing estates. The colourful ceramic panels of Uzbek villagers against landscapes and city views were made by sculptors from the Māksla combine in Riga, among them Gunārs Krollis and Izabella Krolle. Nine openwork ring chandeliers, five metres across and set with coloured stones, are the work of Latvian metal artist Khaim Rysin.

Named after the residential area; literally 'jujube orchard'.
