History and architecture

Until 1992 this was '50 Years of the USSR': the column capitals bore the arms of the Soviet Union and its republics, and themed reliefs hung above the stairs. These were removed when it was renamed after the astronomer Ulugbek, leaving a plain hall of brown granite columns, pale Gʻozgʻon marble and grey granite floors. The nearby park also bore Ulugbek's name for a time and is now Gʻafur Gʻulom Park.
