History and architecture
The showpiece station beneath the country's main square: the Tashkent Metro was officially opened here on 6 November 1977. The chief architect was Lev Popov, sent from Moscow. White columns are faced with Nurota marble, crystal chandeliers shaped like bunches of grapes by Irena Lipene hang in the domes (17 large and 136 small), and the letter 'M', the metro emblem, repeats in the ceiling ornament.
'Independence Square'. Until 1991 it was 'Lenin Square'.
